With the continuous rise in oil prices in recent years, the fuel economy advantages of diesel engines have attracted widespread attention in the industry. Light vehicles including light trucks, pickup trucks, SUVs and MPV utility vehicles have begun to use high-performance diesel power.
Cummins has started developing the light diesel engine since the late 1990s, covering two series: inline four-cylinder 2.8/3.8-liter and 4.2-liter V6/5.6-liter V8. After nearly ten years of development and testing, the product's power performance, exhaust emissions, fuel economy and noise have all reached the expected targets. It is expected to be officially put into production before 2010 at the Beijing Foton Cummins Joint Venture and the engine factory in Columbus, Indiana, USA, where Cummins' headquarters is located.
Cummins’ partners in the field of light diesel engines include BAIC Foton (inline four-cylinder 2.8 and 3.8 liters), Chrysler and Nissan (4.2 liter V6 and 5.6 liter V8 light diesel engines).
